ABOUT US |
Hopefully, the information below, will address the many questions we are so often asked. ~ The name comes from the song, “America The Beautiful”, as the Maine Coon is the closest we have to a native domestic cat. We also wished for this most amazing and unusual of felines to be better known: “From sea to SHINING SEA”. ~ Our “cattery” is our home and we consider our cats “family”, so are treated as very much loved pets, receiving all the attention they so deserve and therefore, have the run of the house, except for brief occasions, when necessity requires, such as mating, birthing, litter training, etc. They do not mind these short confinement periods, as they are often relegated to a fully appointed spare bedroom, complete with all the “amenities”, and seem disappointed that it doesn’t happen more often! ~ All kittens are raised “under-foot” literally from birth and are socialized to insure that they will be ideal family pets and companions. ~ Our goal is to find lifetime loving homes for our “babies” and this is the criteria we use when accepting a “family” for adoption. ~ In the beginning, we were searching locally for Maine Coon kittens as pets, but found these sweet “purr-babies” to be rare and hard to adopt. Having grown up with this wonderful breed, knowing what an ideal family companion the Maine Coon is and being so uncommon in time, we decided to invest our time, effort and money into breeding these wonderful creatures so that others would have an easier opportunity to experience of Maine Coon “ownership”. ~ Back then, if you thought it was difficult to adopt a pet Maine Coon, imagine the trouble we went through to get any breeders to help us start a cattery. There were a few and we are pleased to say that after many years of education, work, effort and careful breeding, we are now producing large, healthy, true to type Maine Coons in all colors. ~ The cats are not “shown” due to Corinne’s agoraphobia. We, as yet, have been able to find a suitable “agent” whom we can entrust our precious “velcro mush babies” to show for us. Just because a cattery does not show, does not mean they do not strive to produce the best possible cats that fit the rules of conformity standards set by CFA or TICA. There is always a health risk involved, from exposure to other cats, minimal though it may be so many breeders choose not to show for that reason alone. ~ As any reputable breeder will tell you, this is a labor of love and not a business, as there is no profit to be made when one provides the best care possible including: food, litter, veterinary expense to insure health. Also keeping the total number of cats to where they enjoy the quality of life they would receive in any family home such as: hugs, kisses and tummy rubs on demand; snuggling up on the sofa to watch TV; a good head groom (ours, not theirs) before spooning to sleep with us at night; interactive play time with their favorite toys; etc. The time alone with just daily cleaning wouldn’t even amount to minimum wage. ~ OK, so having read the above, maybe “labor of love” doesn’t quite fit as such an accurate description as “insanity” does! ~ |
